National Teen Driver Safety Week is October 18-24

Teen driver safety depends on parent and guardian action

Safe driving starts long before anyone gets behind the wheel. This National Teen Driver Safety Week, Livermore Police encourages parents and guardians to discuss safe driving habits with their teens before handing over the keys.

Car crashes are a leading cause of death for teens (15-18 years old) in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2024, there were 2,320 people killed in crashes involving a teen driver. That same year, 496 people were killed in crashes on California roads involving drivers aged 20 or younger.

Teens should understand the dangers of risky driving behaviors, like speeding, texting while driving, not wearing a seat belt and driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

“Meaningful conversations at home can help shape the choices teens make on the road,” Livermore Police Sergeant Harrison said. “Parents and guardians who talk about distractions, speeding and impairment give teens the tools to navigate real-world risks and steer them toward safer habits every time they drive.”

Teens are also encouraged to use free, mobile-friendly resources from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), including the free, mobile-friendly California Quick Reference Driver's Handbook, educational videos and the Teen Driver Roadmap, a step-by-step video guide for teens and their parents to help them prepare to get behind the wheel safely.

The Office of Traffic Safety offers the following tips to support teen drivers:

▪️Learn about California’s provisional licensing law and Graduated Driver Licensing laws, which places restrictions on passengers and nighttime driving during the first year a teen has a license.

▪️Lead by example: Every time you're behind the wheel, it is a chance to model safe driving habits and talk about it with your teen.

▪️Establish safe driving behaviors that are not only expected, but also the law. This includes no phone use while driving, eliminating distractions from friends, always following the posted speed limit and always buckling up. · Friends, family members, parents and guardians can create a teen driving contract to outline specific driving guidelines.

▪️Speak up for safety: Encourage your teen to say something as a passenger if the driver is speeding, distracted, not wearing their seat belt or otherwise driving unsafely.

Teens, parents, educators, mentors and California drivers can also practice safe driving behaviors in realistic situations on the new, free, web-based driving simulation, The Road Ahead, at TheRoadAhead.GoSafelyCA.org. Additionally, there is a user guide that provides an overview for how to get started and how to facilitate discussions about the game experience. The user guide is available online.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Safe Riding Starts With You, Livermore!

You may have spotted Livermore Police out this morning! We were looking for bicyclists practicing safe riding habits as part of our Bike Safety Rewards Program with Meadowlark Dairy.

While we didn’t hand out any ice cream tokens this morning, we’re looking forward to recognizing safe riders in the future!

Here are a few friendly reminders to help keep everyone safe:
▪️Wear a helmet: California law requires bicyclists under 18 to wear a properly fitted helmet.
▪️Use bike lanes: When a bike lane is available, bicyclists are generally required to use it.
▪️Ride with traffic: Bicyclists must travel in the same direction as traffic, not against it. Stay to the right when required and safe to do so.
▪️Know the e-scooter rules: Electric scooter riders must have a valid driver’s license or instruction permit, wear a helmet if under 18, and follow applicable traffic and bike lane laws.
▪️Parents: Please take a few minutes to review these safety reminders with your children.

Our goal is simple: encourage safe riding habits, recognize riders making good choices and help everyone get where they’re going safely.

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month

Drivers are urged to slow down and be alert for people walking

October is National Pedestrian Safety Month and the Livermore Police Department would like to remind drivers to take extra precautions to help protect people walking.

“In Livermore, we’re committed to reinforcing everyday safety actions like slowing down, following the posted speed limit, staying alert and yielding to people in crosswalks,” Livermore Police Officer Cofer said. “Drivers have an outsized role to keep all people walking safe. Remember that pedestrians do not have the same protections as drivers and passengers traveling inside vehicles.”

On average, 19 pedestrians are killed in traffic crashes every day in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2024, an estimated 7,080 people walking were struck and killed by vehicles. Of those people, 1,090 were killed in California alone.

These violations include speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield, and running stop signs or signals.

Livermore Police offers these driving tips to keep everyone safe:

▪️Follow the speed limit, especially in areas with heavy foot traffic, around schools and in neighborhoods where children are present.

▪️Slow down at intersections. Be prepared to stop for people crossing or walking at marked and unmarked crosswalks.

▪️Use extra caution when driving at night or when driving conditions are less than optimal such as rain or fog.

▪️Avoid distractions such as using a mobile device, deep conversations with passengers or eating while driving. Keep your focus on the road.

▪️Drive sober.

Remembering Lil🐴

With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Lil, a beloved 34-year-old Quarter Horse who held a special place in Livermore Police Department history.

Lil helped lay the foundation for our Mounted Unit. Although she never officially deployed, she was an important part of the unit’s beginnings.

Before joining the LPD family, Lil spent much of her life as a junior rodeo horse. Known for her kind and gentle spirit, she was loved by all who knew her.

Lil passed away on September 25, leaving behind wonderful memories and a lasting legacy.

Rest easy, sweet Lil.

Livermore Police Awarded $79,900 Grant for Speeding and Reckless Driving Program to Increase Safety on Roads

Livermore Police announced today that it has received a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support its ongoing enforcement and education programs to help reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths on our roads.

“We are grateful to receive this grant, which will strengthen our traffic enforcement efforts and improve road safety,” Livermore Police Department Officer Cofer said. “Through a combination of education and enforcement efforts, our goal is to reduce dangerous driving behaviors, prevent crashes, and make our roads safer for everyone."

The grant will provide additional programs and resources, including:
▪️DUI checkpoints and patrols focused on stopping suspected impaired drivers.
▪️High-visibility distracted driving enforcement operations targeting drivers in violation of California’s hands-free cell phone law.
▪️Enforcement operations focused on the most dangerous driver behaviors that put the safety of people biking or walking at risk.
▪️Enforcement operations focused on top driving violations that cause crashes: speeding, failure to yield, stop sign and/or red-light running, and improper turning or lane changes.
▪️Community presentations on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding and bicycle and pedestrian safety.
▪️Collaborative enforcement efforts with neighboring agencies.
▪️Officer training and/or recertification to detect and evaluate impairment levels in suspected impaired drivers: Standard Field Sobriety Test (SFST), Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) and Drug Recognition Expert (DRE).

“Traffic safety begins with everyday decisions,” OTS Director Stephanie Dougherty said. “When we address the risky driving behaviors that put everyone on the road in danger, including speeding, distraction, and impairment, we can prevent crashes and save lives. By supporting enforcement efforts and educating communities, we’re helping to build a safety culture where looking out for others and safe travel behaviors are the norm.”

The grant program runs through September 2027.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
