Some young patrons enjoyed a monstrously mad art class last week. In this spooky workshop, children were invited to create a Picasso-inspired portrait of Frankenstein’s monster. Using pastels and mixed media, participants stitched together a monstrously unique portrait.

Looking for more crafty classes for your budding artist? Check out the latest issue of The LPL Connection available in the library or online.

We were so happy to welcome high school juniors from the Citizenship & Science Academy of Syracuse (located on Buckley Road) for a field trip to check out everything Liverpool Public Library has to offer. Students got library cards, made bookmarks, and browsed the teen section. The visit helped build a great relationship that will support students both personally and academically. Nearly all the students checked out materials, and our favorite overheard comment was when one student exclaimed, "This is the hangout spot...we’re going to hang out here from now on!”

Have you ever judged a book by its cover? Meghan Volchko, a writer for Libby Life, wrote an article this month about all the new books she has recently read after noticing the artwork on the cover. From inverted skylines to old rotary phone dials, and a cat in a box to a shaved pencil, these covers all pop on the shelves.

What’s a book cover that you love?

🤝 Civics Tonight- Why We Can’t All Get Along: Political Polarization’s History and Effects
Thursday, Oct. 22 • 7 p.m.
Many people believe that today's political polarization is something entirely new. In reality, political polarization has been a recurring feature throughout history, and it is likely to remain a defining characteristic of our political future. This discussion will focus on the causes of political polarization and its effects, particularly given the basic structure of the U.S. political system. Together, we can try to find a way out and forward.
Dr. Grant Reeher from SU's Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Affairs will present.
This program is part of the Liverpool Public Library's Civics Initiative.

In our recent workshop, Case Closed: Teen Forensics Lab, teens got hands-on investigative experience with the help of Le Moyne College's Dr. Tennyson Doane. It was CSI with an LPL twist. Our participants investigated a "crime scene" like the experts do, looking for clues, processing evidence, and learning how it differs from the movies. Dr. Doane led the exercise that encouraged students to get hands-on...without leaving fingerprints! Looking for more activities for your teen? Be sure to check our calendar of events on our website.

Last month, the Liverpool Public library kicked off the homeschool year with our popular annual Back-to-Homeschool Party. More than 30 families attended and learned about LPL's specialized homeschool programming, made crafts, did science experiments, examined curriculum, took "school" photos, and mingled with other homeschool families.

The LPL has homeschool programming every Tuesday, including STEAM events, book clubs, and much more. Check out the schedule at the library’s website to find out more and register.
