***LPD IN THE COMMUNITY***

Although the Locust Police Department is a small agency, we are blessed with a significant number of officers well-trained and certified to instruct on a variety of law enforcement and first responder topics.

On Monday, Corporal Eric Fore spent some time with the teachers at Locust Elementary School giving a presentation on first aid involving commercial and improvised tourniquets for critical injuries involving heavy bleeding.

Though we hope this type of first aid will never be needed, we appreciate Corporal Fore's training in that area and his willingness to pass along this practical knowledge to the teachers on a skill that could one day be a life saving measure.

Thank you Corporal Fore!

***LPD APPREHENDS VEHICLE BREAKING & ENTERING SUSPECT WITH ASSISTANCE BY CABARRUS COUNTY K9 DIVISION AND PARTNER AGENCIES***

On Saturday September 26th at approximately 8:45 pm, Locust officers were dispatched to a vehicle breaking and entering in progress in The Crossroads subdivision.

Locust officers had a 3-minute response time to the area and were able to locate the suspect who fled into the nearby woods. Our friends at the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office were contacted for K9 tracking support and they responded. LPD was also assisted in their search by officers from the Stanfield and Oakboro Police Departments and deputies from the Stanly County Sheriff's Office.

A K9 track was conducted into the wooded area and after a brief track, the suspect Mr. Evan Gwaltney of Stanfield was located and apprehended without incident.

Further investigation revealed that Gwaltney had broken into two vehicles in the subdivision as well as damaged the fence of another residence in the neighborhood.

Gwaltney was transported to Stanly County Jail where he was booked on two felony counts of breaking and entering of a motor vehicle, damage to property, and resisting an officer. He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

LPD thanks our officers for their efficient response and coordination in their search and for the invaluable assistance provided by our neighboring and partner agencies. A great team effort resulted in justice being served.

***LPD APPREHENDS HABITUAL FELONY LARCENY OFFENDER***

At approximately 3 pm on Wednesday September 16th, Locust officers responded to a larceny in progress at the Locust Wal-Mart. The suspect, well known to Locust officers and detectives was Mr. Marcel Henderson of Columbia, South Carolina who was confronted and apprehended without incident while attempting to conceal close to $1900 in electronics merchandise. At the time, LPD already had active warrants for Henderson's arrest for four prior larcenies that spanned over the last 18 months. Total plus attempted loss of merchandise believed to be taken by Henderson in Locust was in excess of $8000.

At the time of arrest, Henderson also had five other active felony arrest warrants for similar offenses in other jurisdictions in addition to a permanent lifetime ban from all Wal-Mart locations. The approximated total loss to all affected Wal-Mart locations believed to be taken by Henderson is in excess of $100,000.
