Meet one of New Mexico’s most frequently sighted rattlesnakes, the western diamondback rattlesnake. Found across much of the state, these adaptable reptiles can make their homes in desert plains, rocky canyons, and even pine-oak forests.

Western diamondbacks are the largest rattlesnake species found in New Mexico, often reaching 4 to 6 feet in length. Their diamond-shaped markings and distinctive black-and-white banded tails help make them recognizable.

If you encounter one while exploring Ute Lake or the surrounding New Mexico landscape, give it plenty of space. Rattlesnakes are generally defensive rather than aggressive and will usually move along when left undisturbed. A little awareness helps keep both you and local wildlife safe.
