๐ป York Township Through Time: The Ghost Who Never Checked Out
Imagine browsing the shelves of your local library when suddenly, a book falls to the floor.
No one touched it.
A reading lamp flickers on by itself. Footsteps echo from an empty hallway. And somewhere upstairs, somethingโor someoneโseems to be moving.
For decades, visitors to Elmhurst's former public library whispered that they weren't alone.
Welcome to the legend of the Wilder Mansion ghost.
Our story begins in 1868, when businessman Seth Wadhams purchased land in what was then Cottage Hill and built an estate called *White Birch*.
The property passed through several prominent families before Thomas E. Wilder purchased it in 1905. In 1922, the mansion became the Elmhurst Public Library.
But according to local folklore, one of its former occupants may never have left.
His name? Seth Wadhams himself.
Stories circulated about books mysteriously falling from shelves, reading lamps turning on without explanation, and invisible footsteps echoing through the building.
Some believed the mansion's original owner was still wandering the halls, keeping watch over the home he built decades earlier.
And where was this mysterious presence supposedly hiding?
In the attic.
The legend became so well known that it appeared in a published collection of Chicago-area ghost stories.
But was Wilder Mansion really haunted?
Here's where history and folklore collide.
Former library employees suggested the haunting was simply a story invented by a creative librarian. One longtime employee even joked that the only flying object she witnessed was thrown by a child!
Still, the legend endured.
The library relocated in 2003, and Wilder Mansion reopened as a community event space in 2008.
But we have to wonder...
When the library packed up its books and moved away, did its most mysterious resident finally leave too?
So, York Township, we want to hear from you!
