Butterfly identification

๐Ÿฆ‹Keep an eye out this month โ€” monarch butterflies are moving through Texas on their fall migration south, and East Texas wetlands like Caddo Lake are part of the landscape they pass through on the way. It's one of nature's great long-distance journeys, and a good reminder of how connected this ecosystem is to places far beyond our shoreline. If you spot one, snap a photo and share it with us.

The Huntsman. Granddaddy, long legs, ๏ฟผNot really a spider.

The Huntsman. Granddaddy, long legs, ๏ฟผNot really a spider.

Every school playground in America has transmitted the legend for generations, whispered with total confidence:
"Daddy longlegs are the MOST VENOMOUS animal in the world โ€” but their fangs are too small to bite you."
As the daddy longlegs in question, I'm here to file the correction 400 million years overdue: every single word of that is wrong โ€” including "spider."
๐Ÿ”ฌ THE IDENTITY REVEAL: I'm a HARVESTMAN (order Opiliones) โ€” an arachnid, yes, but NOT a spider, any more than a crab is. The forensic checklist:
โ†’ Spiders: two body sections with a waist. Me: ONE fused oval body โ€” I look like a pill with stilts because I am
โ†’ Spiders: usually eight eyes. Me: TWO, on a little turret
โ†’ Spiders: silk glands, webs. Me: NONE โ€” never spun a thread in my life
โ†’ Spiders: venom fangs. Me: NO VENOM GLANDS AT ALL. Zero. I have tiny grasping mouthparts and I... chew. The "most venomous" legend assigned deadly powers to an animal that doesn't own the equipment. (Mythbusting labs have tested every version of this โ€” the venom claim fails at the first step: there is no venom.)
โ†’ Bonus distinction: I can't digest externally like spiders โ€” I eat solid bits: tiny insects, mites, aphids, decomposing matter, fungus. I'm part predator, part janitor โ€” the cleanup crew of your garden wall.
(One honest footnote: "daddy longlegs" is also folk-used for the CELLAR SPIDER โ€” the wispy corner-web spider indoors, a true spider whose venom is medically trivial โ€” and for CRANE FLIES, who get their own post soon. Three unrelated animals, one shared nickname, one shared slander. Today's client is the harvestman.)
๐Ÿฆต THE LEGS โ€” my actual superpowers:
โ†’ The second pair are ANTENNA-LEGS: I wave them ahead like a blind man's cane, tasting and feeling the world โ€” watch closely and you'll see I walk on six and SENSE with two
โ†’ Grabbed by a predator, I DETACH a leg โ€” and here's the nightmare-fuel part: the amputated leg keeps TWITCHING rhythmically for minutes, a decoy pacemaker in the leg itself, hypnotizing the attacker while I stroll away. It doesn't grow back. I budget for it. I'm walking severance packages.
โ†’ And in fall, my kind sometimes gathers in AGGREGATIONS โ€” dozens to thousands huddled in a shimmering, pulsing leg-pile in a shed corner or under an eave (warmth, humidity, safety in numbers). If you've found one and screamed: understandable, and also it was harmless, and also it's kind of beautiful, and also I'm sorry.
๐Ÿ“œ THE SENIORITY CLAIM: harvestman fossils date back over 400 MILLION years โ€” we watched the dinosaurs arrive AND leave, nearly unchanged. Your playground legend is 60 years old. My kind is older than trees.
No venom. No fangs. No silk. No spider. No problem โ€” ever, to anyone.
Just an ancient janitor on stilts, waving his cane-legs through your garden, waiting patiently for the rumor to die before he does.
Share this and finally kill the playground legend. ๐Ÿฆต
