Not all disabilities are visible. ❤️

During Non-Apparent Disabilities Week, we recognize and honor people whose disabilities may not be immediately apparent to others. Chronic illnesses, neurological conditions, mental health disabilities, and many other conditions can significantly impact a person’s daily life, even when there are no visible signs.

Let’s commit to believing people, respecting their experiences, challenging assumptions, and creating communities where everyone is treated with dignity. Remember: You don’t have to see a disability to acknowledge it. Invisible doesn’t mean insignificant.

At Disabled Resources Center, we believe everyone deserves access, respect, and the opportunity to live independently.

A highlighted message reads, “Invisible doesn’t mean insignificant.” The Disabled Resources Center (DRC) logo and tagline, “The Key to Independence,” appear near the bottom above decorative red and burgundy waves.

🌎 October ShakeOut: Earthquake Safety for Everyone!

Earthquakes can happen without warning. October ShakeOut is a great time to practice safety steps that work for people of all ages and abilities. ♿

✅ IF YOU CAN GET DOWN: Drop to your hands and knees, cover your head and neck, and hold on to sturdy furniture.

🦽 IF YOU USE A WHEELCHAIR OR MOBILITY DEVICE: Lock your wheels, bend forward if possible, and protect your head and neck with your arms, a pillow, or a book. Stay in your chair until the shaking stops.

🛏️ IF YOU CANNOT GET DOWN TO THE FLOOR: Stay where you are, protect your head and neck with your arms or a pillow, and move away from windows and falling objects if you can do so safely.

👂 IF YOU ARE DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING: Keep your phone, visual alerts, and communication devices accessible.

🦯 IF YOU ARE BLIND OR HAVE LOW VISION: Keep your cane or other mobility aid within reach and practice your safety plan ahead of time.

🏠 PREPARE TODAY: Secure heavy furniture, keep emergency supplies nearby, and practice a plan that meets your needs.

❤️ Earthquake preparedness should include everyone. Practice today to be safer tomorrow!

This National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we’re celebrating the value, talent, and lived experience that people with disabilities bring to the workplace.

Meet Richard Hernandez, DRC’s Systems Change Advocate & Ticket to Work Program Coordinator (he/el).

Richard appreciates the supportive environment at DRC and the coworkers who are always willing to help. He also reminds us of something employers should never overlook:

“People with disabilities work as hard as people without disabilities or maybe harder. We just want the opportunity to show our employers what we can do for them.”

Employment is about opportunity, inclusion, and recognizing what people can contribute—not making assumptions about what they cannot do.

At DRC, 86% of our staff are people with disabilities. We’re proud to celebrate their talent and contributions this NDEAM.

Diverse Abilities. Stronger Communities. ❤️
