Watch Mayor Rex Richardson and other Long Beach City officials as they mark the activation of the Speed Safety System, a new civilian-led traffic safety program authorized under California Assembly Bill 645 (AB 645) and administered by the Department of Public Works.
The program uses speed detection devices at high-injury corridors and school zones citywide to reduce dangerous speeding, following a year in which Long Beach recorded its highest number of traffic fatalities.
Devices are activated only when a vehicle is detected traveling 11 miles per hour or more above the posted speed limit and capture a single image of the vehicle's rear license plate.
The system does NOT use video, facial recognition or Automated License Plate Reader technology, and citation data is not shared with the Long Beach Police Department or other law enforcement agencies. The program includes a citywide 60-day warning period, running Oct. 7 through Dec. 7, before any citation is issued. Following that period, a driverβs first citation when driving less than 15 mph over the speed limit will be issued as a COURTESY WARNING RATHER THAN A FINE.
