📚 Banned Books Week: Why These Stories Matter

Our Banned Books Week series continues with Ali Blau, Head of Youth Services, reading from All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson.

Ali talks about why this book matters and why the right to read is a right everyone should be afforded.

Books can be windows into lives and experiences different from our own. They give us the opportunity to see the world through someone else’s eyes, to encounter perspectives we may never experience firsthand, and ultimately, to build empathy.

When we limit the stories people can read, we also limit the perspectives they have the opportunity to encounter.

📖 Every reader deserves the freedom to discover stories, perspectives, and experiences that help us understand one another.

📚 Banned Books Week: Why These Stories Matter

Our Banned Books Week series continues with Mr. Jake, Youth Services Librarian, reading from The Case for Loving by Selina Alko, illustrated by Sean Qualls and Selina Alko.

This beautifully illustrated book tells the story behind Loving v. Virginia, the landmark Supreme Court case that struck down laws banning in*******al marriage.

Mr. Jake shares why stories like this matter: we need to remember our country’s history.

Books help us introduce important moments in history to new generations; giving young readers the opportunity to learn about the people, struggles, and events that helped shape the world they live in today.

📖 When we remember history, we give ourselves the opportunity to learn from it.
