Meet Todd County's Farm Bill Biologist:

My name is Laura Kipf and I'm the Todd County Farm Bill Biologist with Pheasants Forever. I grew up spending most of my time outdoors either hunting or fishing, which led to me wanting a career in this field.

I attended Bemidji State University, and got my bachelors in Wildlife Biology with an emphasis on Wetland Ecology. While in college, I completed an internship working for the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks as a Wildlife Habitat Intern, and spent most of the summer spraying noxious weeds and backpack shocking for brown trout.

Currently, I work on programs through the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and Todd County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) to assist landowners on reaching their habitat goals, whether that be through Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), Conservation Easements, other cost-share programs, as well as technical assistance for landowners not interested in a program.

Laura can be reached by calling her at 320-357-0774 or by stopping in at the Todd County NRCS office.

🌱 SOIL HEALTH IN TODD COUNTY πŸšœπŸ„

Check out how one local Todd County producer is testing out Soil Health practices

This spring, a marginal cropland field was transitioned into a high-quality forage mix of peas, oats, and forage collards using no-till practices. By late June, cattle were rotationally grazing the fields.

🎯 The Farmer's Goals:
β€’ Lower input costs
β€’ Boost forage quality
β€’ Increase cattle weight gains
β€’ Extend the grazing season
β€’ Enhance soil structure
β€’ Build soil organic matter

This project is a fantastic example of local collaboration making a real impact on the land and the bottom line.

🀝 Partners in Success:

Funding was provided by the Farmer Climate Action Fund through the UMM Extension's Regional Sustainable Development Partnerships. Technical assistance was delivered by the Todd County SWCD, NRCS, and Millborn Seeds.
