Dirt Bikes, UTVs, & Off-Road Vehicle Safety: Ride Responsibly and Know the Rules
The Washington Township Police Department would like to remind owners and operators of dirt bikes, ATVs, UTVs, and other off-road vehicles that they must be operated only in permitted areas. These vehicles cannot be operated on public roads unless they meet New Jersey’s requirements for legal road use, including proper registration, insurance, and licensing where required.
Operating dirt bikes on public roads or in restricted areas, including local parks and recreational areas, can create safety concerns for riders, motorists, pedestrians, and the community. Unlawful operation may result in summonses, impoundment, and additional penalties. Additionally, failing to stop when directed to do so by a police officer may result in additional criminal charges and motor vehicle summonses, depending on the circumstances.
We understand that riding dirt bikes and other off-road vehicles is an enjoyable recreational activity when done safely and in the appropriate location. Our goal is to help keep our roadways and recreational areas safe for everyone. We ask all riders to know the rules, follow the law, and ride responsibly.
