When people see jewelry made of human hair they are either revolted or intrigued - which says a lot about the ways our understanding of life, love, death, and the human body have changed over the past two centuries.

This talk explores jewelry and adornment made of human hair and worn in New England in the 18th, 19th, and even 20th and 21st centuries through the expansive collection at Historic New England. From construction, to symbolism, and specific stories these pieces tell, the talk shows that the adornments made from hair were deeply personal and so much more than the tokens of death they are often boiled down to in the public's memory.
