🎃 Thinking about leaving your pumpkin outside this year? You may want to reconsider. 🐻

Colorado bears are hungry this year. With food sources in short supply, they’re in hyperphagia—gorging on as much food as they can find to build up the energy they need to make it through the winter.

And that brings us to your pumpkins.

To a bear, your cute, scary, or creatively carved jack-o’-lantern isn’t Halloween décor. It looks like a tasty snack!

To keep your pumpkin safe—and keep bears out of your neighborhood—please bring your pumpkins inside at night. 🎃🐻

A little prevention can help keep bears wild, healthy, and out of trouble.

Note: This property is not located within the Longmont city limits.

The Boulder County Fire Management Program plans to conduct prescribed fire operations this week on the Cottonwood (Hygiene) property near Highway 66 and North 66th Street. Crews expect to burn on Wednesday, Oct. 7, if conditions allow. Operations may shift to Thursday or Friday depending on weather and site conditions. This work will remove vegetation from 15 field laterals to improve water conveyance and is expected to take one day to complete.

Burn projects depend on weather conditions, including relative humidity, precipitation, fuel moisture, and wind. Projects will only proceed when conditions are suitable. Fire managers will monitor all projects until they are called out. Please do not call 911 since these controlled burns are not emergencies.

Upcoming Slash Pile Burning Projects

An additional slash pile burn has been added to the project list originally announced on Sept. 15 and is listed below. Piles will be burned on the Loukonen Outlots property near Lyons on the west side of US 36 and south of Highway 66.

Slash pile burns are conducted to reduce the amount of fuel resulting from forestry operations. Operations will only occur when conditions allow to ensure safe fire operations and containment. The window for operations is open until May 31.

Slash pile burn planned locations:
• Hall Ranch — west of Lyons
• Overland — northwest of Jamestown
• Riverside Ranch — south of Ralph Price Reservoir
• Reynolds Ranch — southeast of Nederland
• Sherwood Gulch — north of Nederland
• Loukonen Outlots (new) — near Lyons

Health Impacts
Smoke from prescribed fires may affect your health. The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment Wood Smoke and Health webpage provides tips to address health concerns related to indoor burning, prescribed fires, and open burns.
