Foreign tourists were robbed in Quito and managed to trace their devices to a house in the Historic Center

A group of foreigners from a U.S. foundation were robbed in Quito while planning to carry out humanitarian work in the province of Cotopaxi. The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 11 , as the tourists were traveling to Latacunga to install water purification equipment in a rural community.

According to the police report , the foreigners were traveling in a van along Simón Bolívar Avenue , near the La Forestal sector , when they decided to stop for a few minutes at one of the panoramic viewpoints in the area.

While they were getting out of the vehicle to take photographs,

criminals took the opportunity to flee with the van , taking with them electronic equipment, backpacks and personal documents .

Tracking of devices and police operation

According to the report, the victims reported the theft to ECU-911 , which activated satellite tracking of the Apple devices (including iPhones and iPads ) through the "Find My" geolocation system . Minutes later, the coordinates pointed to the La Mamacuchara sector in Quito's Historic Center , specifically in the vicinity of a school in the La Loma neighborhood .

The gendarme, from the Manuela Sáenz Police District, in charge of the operation, recounted that, upon arriving at the site, the search indicated an old three-story house , located in front of the educational establishment.

“The location placed us right at a house across the street from the school. I pushed the door and it opened. A Colombian tenant came out; she told us the owners weren't home. Then we went inside with the phone in hand and went up to the third floor ,” the officer detailed in his report.

Once inside, the officers triggered the alarm on one of the stolen iPads , confirming that the device was indeed inside the property.

Several tenants were present at the location and were questioned while the necessary checks were carried out.

Authorities did not specify whether anyone was arrested during the operation, but indicated that the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Judicial Police had taken over the case to continue the investigation .

Police sources indicated that it is an old house with several tenants , and that the location coincides with storage points for stolen goods already registered in previous investigations.

ECU -911 confirmed that the alert was received approximately 30 minutes after the robbery , allowing for a rapid response from units in the Historic Center circuit .

The affected foreigners would be members of a humanitarian organization based in Massachusetts (USA) , dedicated to installing drinking water and sanitation systems in rural communities in Ecuador.

Police reiterated their call to visitors and tour operators to avoid stopping in unsafe areas or without police es**rt on the outskirts of the capital.

The case remains under investigation to determine the identity of the perpetrators of the robbery and to establish whether it is a gang dedicated to stealing belongings from tourists in the southeastern corridor of Quito." -
