October is National Pedestrian Safety Month
During National Pedestrian Safety Month, the Department of Public Safety encourages drivers to slow down and be alert for pedestrians. At some point during the day, everyone is a pedestrian. Unlike drivers, pedestrians do not have the protection of a vehicle and its safety features during a crash.
October, with its many Halloween celebrations and festivities, is the perfect month to refocus pedestrian safety efforts. Drivers should be aware that on Halloween evening, there will likely be more pedestrians on the roads and in unexpected places. Families will be trick-or-treating with children who may be unaware of surrounding traffic and dart into the street and oncoming traffic.
On average in 2024 traffic collisions, a pedestrian died every 74 minutes and one was injured every 7 minutes. An estimated 71,635 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes in 2024, a 5% increase from the 68,241 pedestrians injured in 2023. Additionally, pedestrian fatalities remain high in the United States —18% of all traffic deaths in 2024 were pedestrians. This highlights a critical safety issue that affects everyone.
