Our Archives team has been hard at work bringing some updates to the Guest Cottage! The benches and table tie back to the Ranch School era!

The benches pictured in our current special exhibit were made from the original beds in the Guest Cottage bedroom, purchased at a Zia Company salvage sale in the 1960s by June McMahon. June repurposed the bedframes into benches and stained them, using them in her home. She donated the two benches to us this year. The table next to the bench was “found in collections” in our collection storage, with no provenance. Archive staff matched the benches and the small table to this photograph of the bedroom taken in the 1930s by photographer Laura Gilpin.
It’s so exciting to have three pieces of this custom-made bedroom set back in the Guest Cottage, their original home. If anyone has the vanity set, please get in touch!

Happy Monday! Anyone else wishing for a little more sleep after the weekend? Maybe we should bring back daily rest time like these lucky students in Mrs. Aline Wegert’s second grade class at Canyon School in 1948!

When you visit Los Alamos, New Mexico, and the Los Alamos History Museum you walk in the shadow of history. The Fuller Lodge porch, which you can visit today, was the site of the Army-Navy E Award presentation on October 16, 1945. Fuller Lodge was also used for the filming of this scene in the 2023 Oppenheimer movie.
