115 people have lost their lives in the Maui wildfires. Over 1,000 are still unaccounted for.
Herman Andaya, former head of the Maui Emergency Management Agency, resigned on Thursday, one day after he made to defend his decision to not use outdoor alert sirens as the fires ravaged the Lahaina community.
Meanwhile, land grabbers are feeding on the suffering of Maui's residents. Governor Josh Green has pledged to fight this - "People right now are traumatized. Please don’t approach them with an offer to buy land. Please don’t approach their families to tell them that they are going to be better off if they make a deal. Because we are not going to allow it... Don’t make the mistake of testing us in that space, please."
If you would like to assist wildfire relief efforts, we recommend getting in touch with organizations such as Maui Nui Strong or the American Red Cross to donate or volunteer.

We here at Keep It Real wish everyone a Happy Diwali!
Diwali (or Deepavali), the Festival of Lights, is a Hindu holiday celebrating the victory of light over darkness - in other words, good triumphing over evil.
Celebrated not only in India but around the world, festivities last several days and include the lighting of several rows of clay lamps, and crafting beautiful design patterns called rangoli, along with other activities.
As people around the globe observe Diwali, we hope that you overcome whatever darkness or obstacles may come your way.

Halfway into 2022 and the US has already seen over 200 mass shootings. We don’t claim to know the answer to stopping these tragedies - but we do know that as the delay for meaningful action grows, these statistics will continue to rise. And we can all agree that we don’t want that.

When thinking about convicts or former convicts, one constant argument is brought up: what about their civil rights? The governor of Virginia, Glenn Youngkin (R) has made it so that almost 3,500 former convicts are going to be eligible to try to gain their civil rights back.
This consists of the right to vote, serve in a jury, run for public office, and even become a notary public. This process will be covered by the governor’s office, Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office, and the Department of Corrections. They all will be involved in evaluating the restoration of these rights to these former convicts. “The restoration of rights process provides a fresh step forward for individuals who have made mistakes, but have done their duty to our community and which to be full and productive citizens of our Commonwealth,” said Virginia Secretary Kay Coles James. The governor is the only one with the power and discretion to restore rights to people who have been convicted of a felony and this was a positive and very impactful decision made by him.
This is a very big deal because while this is happening in Virginia, this is something that can lead to other governors and political leaders fighting for the restoration of their former convicts as well. There are even people that argue on the side of current prisoners being able to vote. With more situations like this happening, this can lead to more civil rights being available to the people.
