Kristi Noem’s departure should be an opportunity to restore accountability, transparency, and respect for the rule of law at the Department of Homeland Security. Senate Democrats should be judicious in considering the next nominee and insist on a leader committed to responsible oversight and far less ICE presence in our communities.
As Congress considers DHS funding, it must also establish clear guardrails for ICE: no masks for agents, no warrantless home entries, requirements to display identification and use body cameras, stronger training and use-of-force standards, and greater state and local oversight. These commonsense reforms are essential to ensure immigration enforcement is lawful and accountable.

Taiwanese Americans for Progress strongly condemns the Trump administration’s unprecedented escalation of attacks on immigrant communities with the deployment of the National Guard and Marines. The recent ICE raids, military-style crackdowns, and erosion of legal protections are cruel, dangerous, and un-American.
As Taiwanese Americans, many of us come from families who have lived under martial law-where military power was used not to keep people safe, but to suppress dissent and punish political opposition. We recognize the warning signs when democratic norms are threatened.
We stand in solidarity with all communities targeted by these cruel and unjust actions, and call on every American to reject these inhumane policies and fight for the values of inclusion, democracy, and human dignity.

Joining thousands in Los Angeles to stand for progress!

On February 28, 1947, Taiwan witnessed the brutal 228 Incident, where government forces violently suppressed civilians demanding democracy and justice. What followed was decades of martial law, censorship, and persecution of dissenters under an authoritarian regime.
Fast forward to today, and history feels eerily familiar. In the U.S., we see increasing government overreach, suppression of speech, censorship of dissenting voices, and weaponization of institutions against political opponents. The same patterns that led to authoritarian rule in Taiwan are creeping into America—where questioning the status quo is met with punishment, not debate.
Freedom is fragile, and democracy is never guaranteed. Taiwan fought for decades to break free from oppression and build a democracy—but today, in America, our own democracy is under threat. Government overreach, censorship, and the silencing of dissent echo the warning signs of the past.
We The People are the last line of defense. If we do not stand up now—if we do not demand accountability, free speech, and the protection of our rights—history will repeat itself. The question is not whether democracy can survive, but whether we are willing to fight for it.

Signing my first bill as a Member of Congress. Today, I introduced the Protect Veteran Jobs Act to reinstate Veterans recklessly fired by the Trump Admin and unelected billionaire Elon Musk. Our service members look out for us, we need to look out for them.
