This week in Acrylic Painting, GenSpace members had the chance to take the lead on what they wanted to create.

After weeks of practicing new techniques and drawing inspiration from master artists, members applied what they’ve learned to a project with more creative freedom. The results ranged from masterwork recreations and still lifes to self-portraits.

With everyone working from their own inspiration, no two canvases looked alike—giving members a chance to experiment, make their own artistic choices, and bring more of their individual style to the easel.

Seated Mindful Meditation gives GenSpace members a chance to pause, reset, and enjoy a quieter moment in the week.

Held outdoors in the garden, the class uses guided mindfulness practices to help members focus on breathing, attention, and the present moment in a calm setting.

Because it’s offered as a flexible class with no preregistration required, members can simply drop in when their schedule allows.

Sometimes a change of scenery and a few intentional minutes are all it takes to slow things down.

Poetry & Conversation gives GenSpace members a chance to slow down, read together, and see where a poem might lead.

Each session begins with selected poems, but the conversation quickly expands as members share their own interpretations, memories, and experiences.

The smaller class setting makes room for thoughtful discussion and gives members time to really listen to one another.

Sometimes a few lines of poetry are all it takes to open the door to a much bigger conversation.

After more than three decades running a business with her husband, Diana entered retirement ready to build a new routine. A neighbor introduced her to GenSpace, and she brought several friends along for her first tour. By the time they left, they had all decided to become members.

Since then, Diana has explored everything from fitness and technology to painting, knitting, and digital art.

“Before, I was always busy taking care of other people,” she shared. “Now it’s time for taking care of myself.”

Along the way, she has discovered abilities she never knew she had. After trying acrylic painting, she surprised herself with what she could create. “I’m discovering my abilities. I didn’t know that I had a talent,” she said.

Most meaningful of all is how GenSpace has changed the way Diana thinks about this stage of life.

“Before, getting older was something I was afraid of. Now, after joining here, I love getting older.”

TED Talk Wednesdays gives GenSpace members a chance to explore new ideas and talk them through together.

Led by gerontology intern Alexa, members watch part of a TED Talk and then discuss their reactions, questions, and personal experiences.

Recent conversations have explored topics like passion, ageism, and technology, with each discussion offering a chance to hear different perspectives and reflect on how the ideas connect to everyday life.

Sometimes one short talk is all it takes to start a much bigger conversation.

Learn French gives GenSpace members a chance to build vocabulary, grammar, and conversation skills while exploring the language in creative ways.

Along with traditional lessons, members learn and translate French songs, connecting new words and phrases to familiar music.

For member Diana, the class has also fulfilled a longtime goal: “French was always something I dreamed of learning, but I never had the chance. When GenSpace offered it, I joined from the very first day.”

Now, each class gives her—and fellow members—a chance to keep learning, practicing, and discovering something new.

In celebration of Chuseok, or Korean Thanksgiving, GenSpace members came together to share food, traditions, and time with one another.

Members contributed dishes including japchae, patbap, rice cakes, and fruit, creating a communal meal for everyone to enjoy.

Celebrating Chuseok feels especially meaningful at GenSpace, located in the heart of Koreatown and home to many members with deep connections to Korean culture and traditions.

For others, the gathering was a chance to experience the holiday through food, conversation, and time spent together.

iPad Essentials helps GenSpace members get more comfortable using their devices one step at a time.

Designed for beginners and offered through Senior Planet, the class covers everyday skills like searching the internet, taking photos, downloading apps, and writing and replying to emails.

With plenty of time to practice and ask questions, members can explore their iPads at their own pace and build skills they can use right away in daily life.

Jim came to GenSpace at a time when his daily routine had started to change. With more unstructured time, his doctor suggested trying a senior center.

“I was deeply offended—like, I’m not a senior,” he joked.

But after visiting GenSpace, his assumptions quickly shifted. The classes, lively environment, and people he met made an impression. “If one of the ideas is to change people’s attitude about aging, it kind of worked on me,” he shared.

GenSpace has also given Jim new ways to stay connected to the performance work he has pursued for decades. Improv, comedy, singing, and script writing help him keep practicing between auditions, while fitness classes and Men’s Group add structure and connection to his week.

For Jim, the biggest difference is simple: having somewhere to go where people notice when he’s there—and when he’s not.

“It matters to other people that I’m here.”

Topics change from week to week, ranging from AI in everyday life to questions about legacy, meaningful memories, and personal values.

There’s no single “right” answer—just thoughtful discussion, shared stories, and the chance to learn from one another.

Sometimes the most meaningful part of class is simply having the time and space for a good conversation.
