First responder dogs from various military and law enforcement units showed off their in-bred talents on Saturday, March 15 — Los Angeles K9 Veterans Day — with a working dog demonstration onboard the Battleship Iowa in San Pedro.

Dogs from the Los Angeles Fire Department, Los Angeles Police Department, L.A. County Fire, California Highway Patrol, L.A. County Sheriff, and various other law enforcement agencies along with military units representing the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard took part.

The military’s K9 Corps was created on March 13, 1942, and National K9 Veterans Day has expanded to recognize the service and sacrifice of all first responder working dog teams.

This family-friendly event honored the heroic working dog teams from first responder agencies that perform security and life-saving missions every day throughout Los Angeles County. Missions supported by working dog teams include pursuing and apprehending dangerous suspects; detecting weapons, narcotics, explosives, and other illegal items; search and rescue; and protecting ports and military bases.

Attendees also learned what it takes to be a canine handler.

Special honor and recognition was paid to the search and rescue dog teams that deployed in support of the Palisades and Eaton fires.

On Sept 2, 1945 Japan formally surrendered, making the end of WWII. This pivotal moment came after the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and intense Allied military pressure. The surrender ceremony took place on board USS Missouri (Iowa class Battleship) in Tokyo Bay, officially bringing an end to one of the most devastating conflicts in history.

This day is known as V-J Day (Victory over Japan) and is a significant moment in history, leading to the reconstruction of nations and the establishment of international relations and organizations aimed at promoting peace.

Honoring Those Who Have Served

For the first time in almost 100 years our patriotic Angelenos are coming together on Veteran’s Day to celebrate our members of the U.S. Armed Forces. The Inaugural Veterans Day LA will be held at the LA Memorial Coliseum on November 11th from 9 am to 3pm.

Similar to so many major venues in our country, we almost lost one of our hallmark’s of civic pride this year. But, Los Angeles can be proud! Led by the Chair of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission, Supervisor Janice Hahn, and with the support of our patriotic community, we ensured our Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum’s name would be preserved in perpetuity – so that we may continue to properly recognize the immense sacrifices that our veterans made to protect our country.

With the support and assistance of the many impactful members of our community and the Memorial Coliseum as our venue, Veteran's Day LA will be an outstanding re-dedication to our most well-deserving men and women in the largest populace within our nation. This event will provide a platform for Los Angeles to build upon year after year and will be a profound example to the rest of our country to follow. Visit our website and get your tickets to join us for this free public event that the entire family will enjoy!
