Those rough white patches aren’t part of the whale. They’re
living passengers.

The mother was clearly injured. Old scars, slower breathing, harder effort.
But that calf stayed glued to her side the whole time. They kept going
together. We couldn't look away and we couldn't speak.

Every time the calf tried to come say hello the mother cut it off. Three
times. On the fourth try that sneaky baby found a gap and surfaced right
next to the boat. Mom was NOT happy.

We cut the engine and drifted. Then they just… came to us. Both of them
slowly circling the boat, taking turns passing right alongside. We didn't
move. Neither did our hearts.

Mom just watched patiently while this calf rolled around in seaweed for
several minutes straight. Pushed it, flipped it, got tangled in it, did
it again. Peak baby energy.

We cut the engine and just drifted in silence. Both of them breathing
together, barely moving, the calf tucked right against her side. We
stayed until the light was gone. Some moments you don't want to end. 🌊

The calf got spooked by the sound. Before anything else happened the mother
was already between them. They dove together and disappeared. A reminder
that noise in the ocean affects more than we think.

Mom stayed back. The calf just decided it wanted a closer look. Came right up to us, made full eye contact, then swam back to her. We held our breath the entire time.

Born just hours ago and already fighting to stay afloat. Every time it
sank the mother lifted it back up. We counted seven times before we had
to look away. Part 2 broke us completely. eRescue
