We are testing a new color on our swirled sourdough! Although the beet juice oxidized into a light brown instead of the bright red we were hoping for, that actually helped us turn this bake into a therapeutic moment. We recognized the expectations we set for ourselves or the expectations we perceive to have been set for us by others. Grounding ourselves with self-compassion and taking the time to honor the growth of our skills and knowledge.

One of our core beliefs is to meet people where they are to provide the level of care and services needed to meet their goals. Much like our special order gluten free sourdough here, we customize our programs to meet the needs of the people we work with. Integrating mental health care with physical health care, legal aid, housing navigation and retention, and supported employment in our bakery for people experiencing chronic homelessness and living with serious mental illness. Enhancing the existing continuum of care by bridging the gaps between services and the people who need them.

Traditional mental health services don’t go here, they wait for someone to show up at a clinic. Traditional health care services don’t go here, they wait for someone to show up at the emergency room. Traditional legal aid doesn’t go here, they wait for someone to show up at their office. We are not traditional. We are innovators bringing field based mental & physical health care, legal aid, and more out to the streets where these services are needed the most.

Here’s the cross-section from yesterday’s OGT lamination session. These sourdough loaves are packed full of flavor with a blend of olives, garlic, and sun-dried tomatoes.
The OGT has quickly become one of our most popular sourdough breads and it’s fun to test the dough’s strength during the lamination. We are always amazed at not only what the dough is capable of doing, but what our people are capable of doing.
The strength of the dough mirrors the strength of the people we work with. People who are overcoming the barriers put in their path from experiencing homelessness and living with serious mental illness.
