Meet Miranda! As a student-athlete at Los Angeles Southwest College, she helped lead the women’s basketball team through its exciting return after three years.
Standing at 5’4”, Miranda and her team played with speed, confidence, and unwavering support for one another. Off the court, she’s just as driven, balancing academics, athletics, and a part-time job while pursuing her dream of becoming a lawyer.
Now accepted to Cal State Northridge, Miranda is one step closer to achieving her goal. We’re proud to celebrate Miranda as our LASC Student Spotlight of the Week!

From Los Angeles Southwest College to Cal Poly Pomona.
Chidinma Luciana Obika is proof that purpose and perseverance can take you anywhere.

When you meet Angél McClelland, her warm smile and calm strength immediately stand out. As Executive Vice President of Los Angeles Southwest College Associated Student Organization, she’s pursuing an A.A. in Business Administration with plans to transfer to an HBCU, her top choice being Clark Atlanta University.
After serving 16 years in prison, Angél has spent the last 15 months rebuilding her life through faith, education, and service. She’s active in Umoja, A*O leadership, and peer mentoring, all while managing a local juice lounge and maintaining Dean’s List honors. Even after being hit by a car last December, she finished her finals from the hospital—proving her determination never wavers.
Her message to others is simple yet powerful: “It’s never too late. When you invest in yourself, it will come back. You might not see it now, but it will show later.”
Angél’s ultimate goal is to become Dr. McClelland, using her story to inspire others and show that transformation, leadership, and hope can change a life.

Los Angeles Southwest College proudly spent the past month honoring Hispanic Heritage Month with a vibrant lineup of events dedicated to celebrating the histories, cultures, and lasting contributions of our Hispanic and Latinx communities. Guided by an enthusiastic Planning Committee and embraced by students, faculty, staff, and neighbors, the celebration brought learning, joy, and cultural pride to every corner of campus.
The festivities kicked off with Cultura Quest: A Hispanic Heritage Adventure, a spirited scavenger hunt that invited participants to explore cultural icons and stories while teaming up for fun and discovery. Energy stayed high with our Latin Music Dance Party & Hispanic Heritage Trivia Game, where music, movement, and friendly competition brought the community together for an unforgettable evening.
Art lovers and creators came together as LASC joined a Southern California–wide exhibition during the Art Exhibit Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in the LASC Library Art Gallery. Showcasing powerful student perspectives and artistic expression, the event highlighted the creative strength that lives within our college.
We took a moment to reset and reflect during Cultura Y Calma: Toltec Yoga for Mind and Body, a wellness experience that honored traditional practices while nurturing physical and emotional balance. Families and friends enjoyed an outdoor movie night under the stars with Noche de Cine: Encanto, filling the Amphitheatre with laughter, connection, and shared celebration.
The month concluded with a lively Lotería Fiesta, a crowd favorite that paired music, games, food, and prizes with awareness and support for Undocumented Student Action Week.
Every event showcased what makes LASC special: unity in diversity, pride in heritage, and the power of community when we celebrate together. Thank you to the Hispanic Heritage Month Planning Committee and all who joined us throughout the month. We look forward to carrying this spirit forward every day of the year.
