On May 30, the Los Angeles District welcomed the Japan Commission on Large Dams to a site tour at Prado Dam to see firsthand how the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers coordinates flood risk management for the Santa Ana River Basin. Overseeing over 16 miles of channels and levees as well as 5 flood risk management dams within the basin, USACE coordinates with Orange, Riverside and San Bernadino counties to ensure the safe operation of dams like Prado to mitigate flood risk with the secondary benefits of water conservation, recreation and wildlife habitat.

No dam is risk-free. Ahead of National Dam Safety Awareness Day on May 31, we’re spreading the word that although dams provide great benefits, it’s important to always keep safety in mind.

Tips include:
• Know dams in the areas where you live and work
• Find out how to receive emergency alerts about dam-related incidents
• Build a to-go kit and have an emergency action plan
• Tell your friends and neighbors about nearby dams
• Follow signage and barriers both on the water and land near dams

To learn more about the dams in your area and to start that safety plan, visit the National Inventory of Dams, with data on more than 90,000 dams and tips on flood preparedness: https://nid.sec.usace.army.mil/
