Sexual assault is a crime. And must always be treated as such.

As the latest horrific example of s*xual violence unfolds in our daily news, we at the YWCA Greater Los Angeles join with our national organization and nearly 200 other YWCA local associations in standing with survivors and insisting on change.

“Every person deserves safety from s*xual violence, and every person deserves what we as a nation promise: equal protection under the law,” Lori Carmona, Chief Executive Officer of YWCA Greater Los Angeles, said. “For that reason, and because s*xual violence is an assault on someone’s person as well as their dignity, we join YWCA USA in supporting efforts to strengthen survivor protections and accountability for s*xual violence both on campus and off.”

We are joining our YWCA sisters across the nation and the globe today, , to call attention to the problem of child marriage. This significantly increases the risk of experiencing domestic violence and decreases access to education and healthcare, right here in the United States.

Our state elected leaders can stop this practice in its tracks: Today, 17 states prohibit marriage under the age of 18 without exceptions for parental permission, pregnancy, or court approval. 17 is not enough. We can and must do better for America's girls.

This October, we're providing space for just that with our healing arts workshop series, A Window of Time for You: Rest and Reset. These four free sessions in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month are designed so you can come as you are, create, reflect, and take a little time for yourself.

It's Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Congress must urge the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) to expedite the release of all congressionally approved Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA) and Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) funding.

These delays are putting survivor services at risk and forcing programs to consider staff cuts, reduced services, and even closures. Survivors can't wait.
