Many women leave abusive partners with very little or nothing at all. This is extremely common in situations involving domestic violence.
Abuse often includes financial control, isolation, intimidation, and manipulation that make it difficult to leave safely. Many survivors may leave suddenly to protect themselves or their children, sometimes taking only:
• identification documents
• a phone
• medications
• children’s essentials
• a small bag of clothing
Some leave without access to:
• money or bank accounts
t• ransportation
• housing
• credit cards
• personal belongings
• employment records
• support systems
Abusive partners may intentionally:
• control finances
• prevent employment
• monitor spending
• ruin credit
• withhold important documents
i• solate survivors from family and friends
This is one reason organizations like Los Angeles House of Ruth and other shelters are so important — they help provide emergency shelter, food, counseling, children’s services, housing support, and help rebuild stability after leaving dangerous situations.

It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic loss of a mother whose life was taken too soon. This heartbreaking act of domestic violence has left family, friends, and loved ones devastated as they mourn an unimaginable loss.
The Los Angeles House of Ruth encourages our community to come together in love and support for a memorial gathering and fundraiser to help ease the burden of funeral expenses during this painful time.
This gathering is not only to honor her life and memory, but also to surround her family with compassion and care as they grieve.

When domestic violence happens in the home, children are affected too.
Behind closed doors, many children are experiencing fear, instability, and trauma that can shape their emotional and physical well-being for years to come.
The statistics are heartbreaking:• 30% to 60% of intimate partner violence perpetrators also abuse children in the household.• Children witnessed violence in nearly 1 in 4 (22%) intimate partner violence cases filed in state courts.• 40% of child abuse victims also report experiencing domestic violence.• The U.S. Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect identified domestic violence as a major precursor to child abuse and neglect fatalities in the United States.
Children who grow up surrounded by violence are more likely to struggle with anxiety, depression, behavioral challenges, and difficulties feeling safe and secure. No child should have to live in fear.
At Los Angeles House of Ruth, we are committed to helping survivors and their children find safety, healing, and hope. By supporting families impacted by domestic violence, we can help break generational cycles of abuse and build brighter futures for children.
Together, we can create homes where children feel protected, valued, and safe.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make Mother’s Day beautiful for the mothers at the Los Angeles House of Ruth.
Our campaign was a great success; we exceeded our goal, and for dozens of mothers, this year’s celebration looked very different from last year’s — safer, more peaceful, and filled with hope.
Thank you again for standing with our mothers.

Every child deserves more than survival — they deserve safety, stability, and the chance to dream.
At House of Ruth, shelter is more than a roof overhead. It’s the beginning of healing. It’s a quiet bedtime. The homework was completed without fear. The confidence to imagine a future filled with possibilities.
When children have a safe place to call home, they can focus on what truly matters: learning, growing, and becoming who they were meant to be.
The power of shelter changes lives. 💜

We are just 8 gift certificates away from reaching our Friday Mother’s Day deadline. 💝
This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the strength and resilience of the mothers we serve—women who have made unimaginable sacrifices to keep their children safe and cared for.
Many of these mothers have spent so much time surviving that they rarely have the opportunity to care for themselves. A simple personal care gift card can offer a meaningful reminder that they, too, are worthy of comfort, confidence, and joy. Whether it’s a favorite fragrance, skincare item, or lipstick, these small acts of kindness help restore dignity and self-worth.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month 💚
At Los Angeles House of Ruth, we recognize that healing isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, too. Survivors of domestic violence often carry invisible wounds, and mental health support is a critical part of rebuilding safe, empowered lives.
This month, we stand with survivors and our community to break the stigma, encourage open conversations, and remind everyone that seeking help is a sign of strength.
You are not alone. Support is here. Healing is possible.

This Mother’s Day, we’re honoring the resilience of the mothers who walk through our doors—women who have given everything to protect and care for their children, even when it meant leaving so much behind.
We want to remind them that they deserve tenderness, dignity, and small moments of joy. A simple gift card for personal care—whether it’s a favorite lotion, a new lipstick, or a fragrance they choose for themselves—can help restore a sense of self that often gets lost in survival.
