Over the last two days, HEI in Los Angeles or "The College Connection" conducted workshops at the Church of the Redeemer and at the Dream Center to encourage kids in foster care to attend college. Thanks to special guests Marcus Lansden (Poetic Justice Jeans), Jay Ellis (The Game) and Robert Christopher Riley (Hit the Floor) for sharing their inspirational stories. Thanks to the team of students and recent grads from Yale, Dartmouth, UCLA,CSUN and CSUDH who conducted the workshops! Thanks to the Yale Black Alumni Association, Yale Club of Los Angeles, and Chestnut 219 Empowerment, Inc. for sponsoring the event. Comments from attendees show that it was a life-changing event for the young people who came.
The Higher Education Initiative
The Higher Education Initiative (HEI) is a signature program of the Yale Black Alumni Association.
The Higher Education Initiative conducts college exposure, admissions and financial aid workshops for youth in foster care. The project was launched in Los Angeles in 2009 and has since been conducted in Chicago, Seattle, and Washington, D.C.
