For our final Latino/a/x/e Heritage Month leader spotlight, we're shining a bright light on Maria Elena Salinas, an award-winning journalist and author who spent more than 30 years as a co-anchor of Univision's evening news. Her distinguished career and numerous honors, including Emmy and Peabody Awards, reflect her significant contributions to journalism and Latin American representation in media.

Although Latino/a/x/e Heritage Month has come to a close, our appreciation for the Latino/a/x/e community continues all year long. We're proud to celebrate the voices, stories, and contributions that enrich our Bright Star community and beyond.

Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day by honoring Indigenous communities, their histories, and their continued presence and contributions.

At Bright Star Schools, we acknowledge that our school communities reside on or near the lands of the villages of Waachnga, Yaanga, and Achooykomenga. We honor the Tongva people, who have called Southern California home for at least 10,000 years.

May today deepen our understanding of Indigenous histories and strengthen our respect for the communities whose legacy continues to shape our shared future.

Our next Latino/a/x/e Heritage Month Leader Spotlight is George Meléndez Wright!

George Meléndez Wright was a Salvadoran American conservationist who became the first Latino to hold a professional position with the National Park Service. His groundbreaking wildlife research helped transform how national parks protect and care for wildlife, leaving a lasting impact on conservation in the United States.

This Latino/a/x/e Heritage Month, we celebrate the contributions of leaders like George and honor our Latin American community, whose knowledge, history, and leadership continue to enrich our world!

🎉 Last month, Valor Academy Elementary School had a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate their forever home in the San Fernando Valley!

With more than 300 families, community members, partners, elected leaders, and supporters in attendance, it was a festive event that took nearly a decade of vision, planning and persistence to create permanent homes for our Valor schools. With its opening, all three Valor schools now have permanent campuses, giving families in the Valley the opportunity to begin their Bright Star journey in TK and continue through 12th grade within the same community! This is a forever home for our Cubs today and for those who join us in the future.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring this vision to life, especially our Valor Academy Elementary students, families, educators, staff, and school leaders. Their work is what makes a beautiful new building feel like a school community!

Swipe left to see the joy throughout the day! Congrats to our Cubs community!

As we continue celebrating Latino/a/x/e Heritage Month, we’re shining a light on Dr. Ellen Ochoa, a trailblazing astronaut and engineer who opened new doors in space exploration and STEM.

In 1993, Dr. Ochoa became the first Latina to travel to space. She went on to complete four Space Shuttle missions and later made history as the first Latina and second woman to lead NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Her career is a powerful reminder that representation matters and that new possibilities become visible when people have the opportunity to pursue their dreams.

At Bright Star Schools, we’re proud to celebrate the achievements, stories, and contributions of our Latin American community during Latino/a/x/e Heritage Month and all year long.

🇵🇭 Celebrating Filipino American History Month!

This October, we're taking time to honor the Filipino American community. Filipino Americans have built communities across many generations and have made meaningful contributions to life in the United States.

At Bright Star, we value the cultures and experiences that make our community who we are. Filipino American History Month gives us an opportunity to recognize the heritage, accomplishments, and voices of Filipino Americans while continuing to learn from the history they carry forward.

Happy Filipino American History Month! 🎉

We’re kicking off our first Latino/a/x/e Leader Spotlight by celebrating an artist who has shown the world the power of embracing where you come from.

Performing primarily in Spanish, Bad Bunny has brought Puerto Rican culture and the Spanish language to a global stage. In 2026, he made Grammy history when DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS became the first Spanish-language album to win Album of the Year.

His story is one example of the many ways the Latin American community has contributed to our shared culture and shaped the world around us. Across generations, Latino/a/x/e communities have enriched music, art, literature, education, science, business, sports, public service, and countless other fields. These contributions reflect a rich history of creativity, perseverance, knowledge, and cultural pride.

At Bright Star Schools, we value the diverse voices and experiences that make our community stronger.
