Nothing worse than fu***ng
The village of Bal Harbour, population 2,513, may have a tiny footprint on the northern tip of Miami Beach, but its police department had grand aspirations of going after international drug traffickers, and making a few million dollars while they were at it.
The Bal Harbour PD and the Glades County Sheriffβs Office set up a giant money laundering scheme with the purported goal of busting drug cartels and stemming the surge of drug dealing going on in the area. But it all fell apart when federal investigators and the Miami-Herald found strange things going on.
The two-year operation, which took in more than $55 million from criminal groups, resulted in zero arrests but netted $2.4 million for the police posing as money launderers. Members of the 12-person task force traveled far and wide to carry out their deals, from Los Angeles to New York to Puerto Rico.
Along the way, the small-town cops got a taste of luxury as they used the money for first-class flights, luxury hotels, Mac computers and submachine guns. Meanwhile, the Bal Harbour PD and Glades County Sheriffs were buying all sorts of fancy new equipment.

There was speculation last week that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration might be on the verge of downgrading the Schedule I classification of the cannabis plant. Unfortunately, the end result proved the implications behind the rumors were somewhat overstated, as the agency simply moved to ease the restrictions surrounding one of the herbβs most infamous non-intoxicating compounds in an effort to abridge the research process for Big Pharma.
Last Wednesday, Tom Angell with the Ma*****na Majority revealed that he had obtained a letter from Congressman Earl Blumenauer that suggested the Food and Drug Administration and DEA were finally working together to reclassify ma*****na under federal law. Although the details were vague, the document, which was sent to Blumenauer by the Justice Department, clearly states that the βDEA is currently reviewing two petitions to reschedule ma*****na in accordance with the [Controlled Substances Act].β
The news of this development generated a great deal of excitement in ma*****na advocates across the nation. The consensus was that regardless of how small the reform, if the federal government did finally decide to change the Schedule I status of the cannabis plant, it would be a big step in the right direction. An article published in SF Weekly suggested, βThe drug is in a good position in Schedule Iβ because βthereβs nowhere to go but down.β

No substantial evidence links ma*****na to traffic accidents, domestic violence or cancer, yet pot is illegal and listed as a Schedule I controlled substance by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. Meanwhile, alcohol remains legal despite the fact that it has been proven to contribute to many societal ills, including domestic violence and auto accidents.
In 2011 alone, an individual in the U.S. was arrested for ma*****na use, sale or possession every 42 seconds, according to the FBIβs Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. Those numbers have been climbing.
Some of the obvious hypocrisy inherent to ma*****na prohibition is highlighted in a commercial that ran a brief stint before NASCAR audiences last month, until it was removed to preserve the βfamily atmosphereβ of the event, according to race organizers. The ad space for the commercial was purchased by the Ma*****na Policy Project (MPP), the largest ma*****na legalization advocacy group in the states, and the creators of the commercial.
The Huffington Post reported that MPP celebrated the commercial as: ββ¦ the first time a pro-pot campaign would be seen at a major sporting event. Organizers for the Brickyard 400 race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway disputed that claim, noting that the boards set to display the commercial were not technically on stadium grounds. When officials with the company that had allowed MPP to purchase air time caught wind of its pro-ma*****na message, they scrambled to take it down.β
