THE PURPOSE OF NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCILS

The voters of Los Angeles passed a new City Charter in 1999 which calls for a citywide system of independent Neighborhood Councils, chosen by the people of the neighborhoods themselves. The purpose of Neighborhood Councils is to promote public participation in City governance and the decision-making process so that government is more responsive to local needs

Senator Lola Smallwood-Cuevas is hosting the 2nd Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Event – in partnership with LA County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, Assemblymember Sade Elhawary, LAUSD, and UMMA Health – on Sunday, September 28 from Noon – 4 pm. We are hosting the event at Mary McLeod Bethune Middle School, 155 W 69th St in South Los Angeles.

This community event will honor the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic, Latinx, Indigenous, and Afro-Latinx communities through vibrant music, dance, and art. We’ll also have:

Live performances from local artists
Free food for attendees
Health screenings & wellness resources
Information booths from community organizations
Giveaways, and more!

You’re warmly invited to join us for our next Shine LA event in South LA on Saturday, September 27th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, along Gramercy (41st Drive to 42nd Place).

This Shine LA event will be a little different from those in the past. We’re thrilled to share that the Mayor’s Office is partnering with the Gramercy Block Club, with strong support from Council District 8, to bring Shine LA into the heart of their Block Party. Together, we’re creating a community celebration that goes beyond a clean-up and offers something for everyone.
