On September 22, 2026, EmpowerLA was honored to join the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners for the first Joy P. Atkinson Neighborhood Council Excellence Awards Ceremony. Previously known as the EmpowerLA Awards, the Joy P. Atkinson Neighborhood Council Excellence Awards honor the legacy of the late Commission President Emeritus Joy P. Atkinson from the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners. This year, the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners recognized Pacoima Neighborhood Council, North Hollywood NorthEast Neighborhood Council, Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council, MINC, North Westwood Neighborhood Council, and Los Feliz Neighborhood Council for their dedication to promoting greater civic participation in government and making government more responsive to local needs. EmpowerLA joins the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners in celebrating these acco,mplishments, and in honoring the legacy of late Commission President Emeritus Atkinson.

We are excited to share that earlier this month, Flor Chaidez was officially sworn in to the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners! Representing East Los Angeles Neighborhood Councils, Commissioner Chaidez will bring firsthand knowledge and experience to her role. Commissioner Chaidez has served as the Social Justice Director and as President of Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council, where she facilitated community dialogues, workshops, town halls, candidate forums, donation drives, and other events to support the Eagle Rock and East Los Angeles community. As a Board of Neighborhood Commissioner, she looks forward to bringing the same diplomacy, collaboration, and commitment to service that have guided her throughout her many years of community leadership.

Last month, Pico Union Neighborhood Council and Westlake North NC brought together nearly 200 youth, over 25 community organizations, and over 500 neighbors at their 5th Annual Bike Safety Camp and Earth Day Fest. This year, they were able to distribute 55 brand new children’s bikes and helmets, 200 free grocery bags, and 110 backpacks. Kids participated in a youth bike safety course, while adults were able to take an e-bike workshop with LA Metro Bike Share. Everyone in attendance enjoyed music and dance performances by Angelica Center for Arts and Music, composting classes with Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment, complimentary refreshments, community resources, and an opportunity to meet neighbors and friends. On behalf of EmpowerLA, we congratulate Pico Union and Westlake North Neighborhood Councils for another great Bike Safety Camp & Earth Day Fest!

Neighborhood Councils make an impact! harborgatewaysouthnc hosted Game Night, bringing together families to celebrate community engagement by connecting them to local sports programs. The event highlighted recreational resources and programs for youth offered at Normandale Park; families enjoyed free tacos and an awards presentation for the youth who participated in the Youth Baseball Spring League. US Rep Nanette Diaz Barragán was in attendance and shared her experience playing youth baseball at Normandale Park. The event was part of Harbor Gateway South’s series of events cultivating a relationship between youth and Los Angeles Recreation and Parks.
