Henriƫtte Ronner-Knip painted domestic animals, and after 1879 she specialized to cats. She knew unerringly texture of the fur, eyes and colour display, and she found the sometimes quiet, sometimes playful and inquisitive nature of cats. Her work was especially popular with the rising bourgeoisie in the 19th century. She portrays her animals playing, sleeping and creeping up and over the costly furniture and luxurious fabrics that was so popular with wealthy citizens. Both in the Netherlands and Belgium, she was knighted for her work.
