As it voted for a historic end to pretext police stops, the Los Angeles City Council also beefed up funding to extract police from mental health calls, replacing them with unarmed, trained clinicians. Since 2024, the teams handled more than 20,000 calls. This is what worked for!

Yesterday, the LA City Council voted to ban LAPD's practice of pretextual stops, which has caused so much damage to Black and brown communities in our city. John Kim detailed some of the damage and celebrated the courage of the decision. Now, the Police Commission must follow through.
Two months ago, Brian Jointer, a father of boys, told City of Los Angeles council members of his harrowing encounter with LAPD. Today at 10 a.m., the full council is set to decide whether to ban pretextual stops like the one Brian and his sons experienced.
