Pool Safety Reminder - Summer is fast approaching!
As families spend more time around pools this season, please take a few simple steps to help prevent a tragedy. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly.
1. Assign a water watcher
Always assign a responsible adult as the water watcher, and make sure their only job is watching the water. Avoid distractions such as phones, conversations, alcohol, or leaving the pool area.
2. Stay within arm’s reach of young children
Young children should always be within arm’s reach of an adult when they are in or near the water, even when a lifeguard is present.
3. Secure the pool area
At home, keep pools protected with proper fencing, self-closing and self-latching gates, pool covers, and door or gate alarms. Keep toys away from the pool when it is not in use.
4. Teach children to ask permission
Make sure children know they must ask an adult before entering the pool or going near the water.
5. Use proper life jackets
Children, weak swimmers, and anyone around open water should wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Do not rely on inflatable toys or floaties as safety devices.
6. Check pool and spa drains
Make sure pools and spas have safe drain covers. Teach children to stay away from drains, and never use a pool or spa with a broken, loose, or missing drain cover.
7. Enroll children in swim lessons
Swim lessons are an important layer of protection, but they do not replace adult supervision.
8. Learn CPR
Parents, caregivers, and pool owners should learn CPR, because seconds matter in a water emergency.
Before the fun begins, take a moment to check the pool area, talk through the rules, and assign a water watcher.
Simple steps save lives.

Why do some places have lots of small earthquakes in a short period of time?
It’s called an earthquake swarm—a cluster of earthquakes in the same area over days, weeks, or months.
Earthquake swarms are common in California and are one reminder that earthquakes are a regular part of life in our state.
