It’s been almost 2 years since my mother past away, launching an aggressive action by the city of Los Angeles against my family to remove me from our place of business for almost 60 years. Their stated reason I simply that the contract died with my mother whereas I signed the contract and was mysteriously removed. Our family has prove and of this yet the city denies us. I feel the truth is that since my location is the most prime spot. They feel it can be offered at a higher rent rate. The city has spent almost 200 thousand fighting me in court. For a back rent of 18 thousand dollars incurred post covid. My attorney cost is around 80 thousand. This is absurd and was not necessary. I simply wanted to continue the family legacy. Tomorrow on November 13 trial begins. Richard Hernandez vs the City of Los Angeles. I have personally ran this little donkey stand for over forty years. Every member of my family from one time or another is part of the Little donkey. We may have thirty days to vacate if we loose. It have been a long and beautiful track. Of all the wonderful families I have brough smiles to. To the friends I made to the connections and long lasting friendships. The events in Hollywood Pasadena Beverly Hills and the the movies it made. The magazines the tv spots OLVERA STREET will never be the same. Politicians, actors, celebrities but most. Children and their parents who time after time would bring theirs loved one for an everlasting pictures. The hats the sarapes and guns that adorned each photo. The Mexican Santa the Easter bunny and the unforgettable day of the dead face painting the began about thirty years ago. The teenagers that I mentored for years that went on to be professionals. The friends I hired when in need between jobs. The smiles of young and old when they tell me the remember when they came here for the first time. And the donkey is the most memorable. Yes Olvera street will not be the same.

Update July 15th 2024: Despite community outrage and your public support, El Pueblo voted on Thursday, July 11th to evict us. Our family is shocked and devastated at this news.
However, we are not going down without a fight. Our family intends to fight this till the end. We have decided to pursue legal action against the council to remain in our current space. We are asking for your donation to help us with legal fees and other costs needed to remain where we have been for the past 35+ years.
the Hernández family believes that La Careta and Jorge el b***o are cultural landmarks in LA. We are doing everything we can to protect this space and our family legacy.
If you can’t donate, please spread the word and share. Any little bit helps.
