Rare red-flanked bluetail has bird-lovers flocking to L.A. for a glimpse 01/14/2019

The Clark has been in the news lately, but not for anything discovered in the reading room...

Rare red-flanked bluetail has bird-lovers flocking to L.A. for a glimpse Flocks of hard-core bird watchers are converging on a downtown Los Angeles library to catch a glimpse of an extremely rare red-flanked bluetail. The Old World avian species has only been spotted in North America twice before, and has made a temporary home outside W.A. Clark Memorial Library.

Our manuscripts librarian made a big discovery at the Clark yesterday and almost 100 people have come to the library this morning to see it — but it isn’t in the reading room. Our gardens behind the library have been hosting a rare bird — a Red-Flanked Bluetail, which is a resident of Old World spruce forests and should be spending the winter in East Asia right now. Vagrant birds aren’t anything unusual - birds overshoot their migration routes all the time or migrate in the wrong direction, but a Bluetail in Los Angeles is pretty big deal for birders. This species has only been recorded twice before in California and has only a handful of other North American sightings in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Maybe our new slogan should be Rare Books, Rare Birds? 📷 : @ William Andrews Clark Memorial Library

We spent yesterday afternoon packing seeds for our new seed sharing program, The Clark Library Seed Catalogue. We’ve found some historical heirloom veggies, herbs and flowers from that we think have cool connections to items in our collections and want to share them with you! We’ll start distributing seeds at our Open House in October 10th from 4-7pm. After that The Seed Catalogue will be open for business in the library’s reading room during our regular hours. We hope you will stop by to pick up some seeds for your garden and grow along with us at 🌱🦉🌱
