Seconds count, training takes over, and miracles happen.
On May 9, the crew of LAFD Station 86 responded to a parent's worst nightmare: a 3-year-old girl pulled from a swimming pool in Studio City, unresponsive and without a pulse.
Within 4 minutes of dispatch, first responders were on scene. Within 5 minutes, they initiated advanced resuscitative care, seamlessly combining continuous CPR with critical airway management. Just 4 minutes later, the team achieved ROSC—Keira’s heart was beating on its own again.
On October 20, 2026, Captain Justin Randolph, Engineer Shawn Phillips, Engineer Daniel Harris, and Firefighter/Paramedics Scott Luft, Curtis Faulkner, Preston Vowels, and Dispatcher Alfred Camacho were formally recognized for their lifesaving actions.
The greatest honor of the day? Having 3-year-old Keira and her parents there to present the awards themselves.
"Nothing weighs on a firefighter like a call involving a child," said an LAFD official. "What this crew accomplished under that level of pressure represents the very best of our department.
Seeing Keira here today with her family reminds all of us why we do this work."
Join us in thanking the crew of Station 86 for their swift action, exceptional clinical skill, and dedication to keeping Los Angeles safe.
