Join us at the Neutra VDL House for Contemporary Ikebana, a special exhibition celebrating the 45th anniversary of Sogetsu Ikebana artist Haruko Gyokushun Takeichi .sogetsu.la
The exhibition features floral works by Haruko and her students, engaging in a quiet dialogue with the surrounding modernist architecture.
Featured alongside the arrangements are ceramic vessels by Mas Ojima. These works transcend the role of containers, acting as sculptural counterparts to the Ikebana arrangements.
Please note that on these dates, we will not be holding our usual guided tours. Instead, the property will be open in an open-house style, allowing visitors to walk through the space at their own pace to view the architecture and the art installation.
Dates: Saturday, Jan 17 & Jan 24
Time: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Location: Neutra VDL House
Tickets: $15 Adults | $10 Students/Seniors | Kids Free

Photo-collage with Two Segments at Richard Neutra’s Silver Lake house in Los Angeles, 1938.
Barbara Hepworth
This black-and-white image comes from Barbara Hepworth’s personal archive—a 1938 photo-collage in which she places her sculpture Two Segments in front of Richard Neutra’s original VDL House in Silver Lake.
The collage was later shown in Barbara Hepworth: Sculpture for a Modern World at Tate Britain. There’s no evidence the sculpture ever stood here, but the image shows how Hepworth used photography and architecture as active tools in her process.

______
Game of Goose is a site-specific exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Maayan Elyakim, created for the VDL House in Los Angeles. Curated by Dan Handel, the exhibition draws its name from the historic board game and explores movement, chance, and shifting mental landscapes, transforming the modernist residence into a reflective and dynamic experience.
Delving into the lesser-known dimensions of the VDL House, the exhibition weaves a narrative shaped by its history as a home, social hub, and workspace. Inspired by the House’s interplay of carefully designed boundaries that allow for constant fluctuations of movement, social interactions, and mental states, each artwork in the exhibition resonates this duality in microcosm. The exhibition’s spatial journey—from the ground floor entrance to the rooftop—is conceived as an intensifying gradient, transitioning from the cerebral to the experiential, much like navigating a three-dimensional game board.
