Matador Speech and Debate

In cooperation with the Mike Curb College of Arts, Media and Communication and the Department of Communication Studies, the Matador Speech and Debate Team invites you to the Spring 2018 Robert Barbera Speech and Debate Intramural to be held Saturday, April 21, 2018.
The focus of the debate is on communication, reasoning, and examining the substance of the resolution (the desirability of establishing national health insurance) rather than “procedurals.” Formal debate theory is not assumed, and debaters should adjust their arguments accordingly.
We will have Open and Novice divisions. The Open division is for debaters with any previous debate experience (including debaters who competed in the Fall). The Novice division is for totally new debaters, or students in argumentation classes.
For the Speech side, We're offering 2 rounds plus finals for three categories of events: Informative, Persuasive, and Interpretive Pieces. We will be holding both Open and Novice Divisions for each speech category.
In case anyone needs another reason to participate, in the second and second place debate winners will receive awards of $250 and $500 dollars respectively in both the novice and open divisions. Awards will also be given to the top 10 speakers for speech. The Deadline for Entry is Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at 5:00PM. We hope to see you there!

Congratulations to Melinda Gevorgian (3rd place novice speaker) and Eugene Tarasyuk (1st place novice speaker) for their outstanding performance this weekend at California State University, Long Beach!!! All those hours of hard work are starting to pay dividends. Let's keep it up!

Today is National Speech and Debate Day, and the Matadors are representing! We have 16 different students competing in four tournaments this weekend on three different college campuses! That is two debate tournaments, two speech tournaments and a whole lot of learning!

Good luck to all of our first time competitors, and our students trying to qualify for nationals!!
