We ensure that UCLA’s voice is heard in our communities and in the halls of government.

The Government & Community Relations division of UCLA is the link between campus and community, and between the University and government. We work to build bridges between UCLA, the greater Los Angeles community and the government entities with which we interact each day by providing ideas, information, counsel and assistance. In the process, we seek to strengthen support for UCLA, the University

On February 20, UCLA Government and Community Relations, alongside senior campus leadership, welcomed Assemblymembers José Luis Solache Jr. and Mark González for a campus visit. During their time on campus, the assemblymembers participated in a roundtable discussion with the UCLA offices of Administration, Housing & Hospitality, Enrollment Management, Financial Aid & Scholarships, and Health. The roundtable highlighted UCLA’s far-reaching impact across the region and state, while also addressing key challenges the university faces.

On February 24, UCLA alums Robert and Helen Singleton, and Robert Farrell, were honored by
Los Angeles County Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Janice Hahn for their leadership during the
1960s Civil Rights movement. In 1961, all three joined several other alums and more than 400
civil rights activists in a national effort to challenge segregation in interstate travel. Participating in the Freedom Rides, these students faced arrests and violence, putting themselves at personal risk in the fight for civil rights.

Dr. Robert Singleton, a UCLA NAACP leader, went on to serve as Founding Director of the UCLA Center for Afro-American Studies (later renamed the UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies). A resident of San Pedro, Robert Farrell went on to serve as Los Angeles City Councilmember for the 8th District from 1974 to 1991 where he
championed affordable housing, economic development and expanded transportation access.
