Earlier today, the Board of Supervisors has adopted a formal Land Acknowledgment for County of Los Angeles.

A Land Acknowledgment is a statement that recognizes an area’s original inhabitants who have been forcibly dispossessed of their homelands and is a step toward recognizing the negative impacts these communities have endured, and continue to endure, as a result.

To get to this point, the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture and Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission held several facilitated sessions with six local Tribes to develop the language of the acknowledgement, as well as guidelines for its use. We are grateful to the the tribal leaders, and hope today marks just the beginning of a new chapter in the County--one centered on truth, healing, and transformation.

Supervisors Hilda Solis and Janice Hahn authored the motion:http://file.lacounty.gov/SDSInter/bos/supdocs/174345.pdf

Check out the full Land Acknowledgement there, and learn more about the First Peoples of Los Angeles County at the Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission website, https://bit.ly/3FC5z3k.
