CALPIRG Energy Service Corps summer term of service has officially ended! It has been a great, fun, and meaningful and progressive summer. We've taught about 1,700 youth in summer camps concerning what they can do about the energy and environmental crisis, educated 120 households on how they can save energy and cut the costs of their bill by up to 40%, and weatherized 10 low income homes and non-profit buildings and made them more energy efficient!
Although the AmeriCorps term of service has come to a close, students will continue to advance energy efficiency at their respective schools with their campus CALPIRG Chapters.
Calpirg Energy Service Corps L.A.
We are a passionate group of college students and grads dedicated to saving energy and improving the environment in LA through community service!
Energy conservation is a pressing issue because in California we use up a lot more energy than we produce. 80% of this energy comes from burning dirty, non-renewable fuels like coal, oil, and gas. This unfortunately pumps a lot pollution into the air and using these fuels is getting more costly each year; thus, we realize that we need to take action and start bringing change today.

Wishing for Hyperloop, betting on high-speed rail It's easy for Californians to get breathless about Elon Musk 's futuristic Hyperloop, considering how much bad news they've gotten about the high-speed rail line they voted for in 2008. So when Musk revealed details of his idea Monday afternoon in a blog post , Golden Staters could be forgiven…

The Media team of CALPIRG ESC had a really fun time touring the LA Times!! It was amazing to see the inner workings of the newspaper and the media, and we learned so much about its history and the writers. So much of it goes under-appreciated, but putting out news in a timely, fast-paced fashion and getting everything printed out and delivered is a lot of work! News definitely does not come easy, even though buying a newspaper is cheap.

Talk about having an AWESOME cultural experience immersing into the Sikh/ Indian culture while serving the Riverside community! Who knew that AmeriCorps members would be so ethnically and culturally conscious during this trip?
A big shout out and thank you to the Sikh temple and community for letting us stay/ sleep in their building and providing food for us THE WHOLE week we were there FOR FREE! They were so amazing and welcoming to us, and our trip wouldn't have been the same without them generously donating their space to us.
We definitely had a great learning experience staying at the Sikh temple and being exposed to a culture/ religion different than our own!

Council Member Mike Gardner and UCR's Director of Sustainability John Cook spoke in the beginning about Riverside's efforts to becoming a more green and sustainable city and after we weatherized the Islamic Center!! Riverside is actually one of the leading cities in California for green energy, and AmeriCorps members were able to team up with leaders in Riverside to help further the city's green initiatives last week. Good stuff, good stuff.

CALPIRG ESC interns have been super packed this week going all over LA educating many youth in various summer camps!! Today we went to the East LA YMCA and taught a group of cute and energetic kids about what they can do to be better stewards of energy and the environment, and specifically what the best modes of transportation are to cut pollution. Our goal is to educate 10,000 kids this summer and we are working our way up!! This was only one of the many--we are keeping ourselves busy!!!
