Today, we commemorate the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide at the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument in Montebello.

This monument is tall, and it is hard to miss, but that’s the point. Monuments should force you to contemplate their existence and what they stand for.

Its eight 75-foot columns are a powerful reminder of the horrors committed during the Armenian Genocide, where over 1.5 million people were murdered and over 1 million displaced. It is also a testament to the strength and resiliency of the Armenian community that has survived and continues to survive against new threats of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

May we never forget the horrors of the past, and let us strive for a future of love, acceptance, and prosperty.
