Lanterman 60 for 60 ~ Highlight 15 of 60 – Civic Engagement and Advocacy

Lanterman Regional Center’s advocacy is rooted in its many community and professional partnerships united by a common goal – helping the people we support, and their families achieve the best outcomes. In this “60 Highlights for 60 Years” post we highlight advocacy available through Lanterman’s Special Education Law Clinic.

For children and young adults under 22 who are receiving school district services, Lanterman Regional Center may not be the primary funding source for therapies and specialized educational supports, but our commitment remains the same – to advocate for families, provide guidance, and support individuals and families on navigating the Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Individual Transition Plan (ITP) systems to access appropriate services to make academic strides (or progress).

In a one-of-a-kind partnership, Lanterman Regional Center has operated the Special Education Law Clinic for more than 30 years. Law students from the top five law schools volunteer to provide educational advocacy and IEP supports. The clinic’s dedicated attorneys who guide the Law Clinic, Marjan Kermani and Meredith Goetz, also offer instructional training through conferences on critical aspects of IEPs and ITPs.

Ms. Kermani and two law student volunteers also participate regularly in Lanterman's biannual Transition to Adult Services conferences. There, they help families prepare for the ITP process and understand what services are available as they transition from school to adult services.

To learn more about conferences or educational resources to support your school age children, visit https://lanterman.org/client-and-family-services/school-age/.

To find out more about educational advocacy through the Special Education Law Clinic, contact your service coordinator for eligibility criteria.

Together, through professional and community partnerships, Lanterman staff is here to support and advocate for you and your loved ones.

Lanterman 60 for 60 ~ Highlight 14 of 60 – Civic Engagement and Advocacy

You've met a couple of the members of Lanterman’s Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC) in posts earlier this week, so now we spotlight what is the CAC for this “60 Highlights for 60 Years” post.

The CAC is made up of adults served by Lanterman Regional Center who report to and advise the Board of Directors. The committee typically includes no more than 10 members, led by a staff advisor.

The CAC provides input, advice and counsel on policies, services and programs offered to individuals and families by Lanterman Regional Center. As adults served by the Center, their perspective is invaluable in the monitoring and review of the Center's performance plan. Their input is regularly sought prior to performance plan, caseload ratio, Purchase of Service data, and other presentations made to the general public.

Beyond their board advisory role, CAC members support other self-advocates and their families by providing informational videos, sharing resources, and bridging connections to one another. Members receive education and training on topics such as voting rights, client's rights, employment options, Self-Determination and more. Through this training, they become equipped to help other individuals, families and professionals better understand the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

CAC Monthly Meetings

The Consumer Advisory Committee meets:
- on the second Monday of the month from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
- in-person alternating between Glendale and Los Angeles locations
- or online via Zoom
- more info at https://lanterman.org/client-and-family-services/adult/client-advisory-committee/
- contact Jacqueline Nunez for registration or interest at 213.252.4926 | [email protected]

Lanterman 60 for 60 ~ Highlight 13 of 60 – Civic Engagement and Advocacy

For this “60 Highlights for 60 Years” post, we feature the second of several self-advocates who are making a meaningful impact in our community - James Li, a Consumer Advisory Committee (CAC) member at Lanterman Regional Center and a volunteer at the Koch-Young Resource Center (KYRC).

James is a 47-year-old self-advocate with cerebral palsy. Originally from New Jersey, James has a master’s degree in Diplomacy and International Relations and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He worked as a library assistant in his hometown for seven years and spent 15 years as a substitute teacher, an experience that deepened his ability to connect with and interact with young people. From an early age James knew he needed to develop strong advocacy skills, as many people doubted him throughout his educational journey.

James has lived in Los Angeles for the past 10 years. He is currently volunteering at the KYRC for the second time, having previously served there for three years before the pandemic - putting his library experience to good use. At the KYRC, James helps clean and shelve toys, organize and shelve books, conduct shelf reading, and assist his colleagues whenever needed. He greatly enjoys volunteering alongside a team he describes as dedicated, reliable, friendly and supportive.

In addition to his volunteer work, James serves on the CAC at Lanterman. During the committee’s monthly meetings, members discuss important issues impacting the community and shape the agenda based on their shared priorities and experiences. James appreciates that every committee member brings valuable insight and lived experience to the conversations.

What James enjoys most is the opportunity to exchange ideas, perspectives, and experiences in a collaborative environment where everyone’s voice is valued.

James shares, “I have thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at the KYRC and working with my fellow CAC members. Everyone is wonderful, dedicated, and empathetic toward helping people with disabilities. I could not ask to be part of a better team!”
