Many early LAPD uniforms were modeled after Civil War era military coats, particularly that of Union Officers. We see variants of buttons grouped in fours, or evenly spread apart for supervisory officers (Sergeant and above), while LAPD's patrol officers had a single line of buttons running down the middle.
One of the earliest known manufacturers of LAPD uniforms was the M.C. Lilley Uniform Co., who appeared to profit in the Reconstruction Era of the United States and its proliferation of veteran groups or other organizations demanding members wear uniforms.

Policeman Dave Weisner inspects winshield damage received by rocks and bottles thrown at him and hos partner when attempting to arrest Melvin Townes on April 22, 1964.
According to the Valley Times, and California Eagle newspapers, Townes was stopped for driving with broken taillights. During the stop, a crowd of onlookers formed and eventually turned into a riot. Policeman Weisner was reported to have suffered a heart attack during the melee and as evident with this photo, survived. The case disposition is unknown, but Townes was released after no witnesses showed up to trial.

Today is 7/14...today is 714! You Dragnet fans and those who do not know yet will appreciate this! Jack Webb, the creator of hit LAPD shows "Dragent" and "Adam-12" used Sergeant badge 714 for his on-screen alter-ego, Sergeant Joe Friday. Why 714? It was the batting average of his favorite baseball player, Babe Ruth. When Jack Webb passed away, Chief Daryl gates retired Sergeant badge 714 from service, never to be worn by any LAPD employee ever again.
Special thanks to VLAC member Kevin Ahlemeir and his dedication to keeping the Jack Webb flame alive!

Suspect sketches of Richard Ramirez AKA the Nightstalker from the summer of 1985. The Nighstalker threat left many Los Angeles residents and much of Southern California in fear. As the heat of the season grew, people gambled whether they sweat through their sleep in hot homes with their windows locked, or leave them open and welcoming the Nightstalker - a true monster.
