Plastic litter doesn’t just disappear. Over time, sunlight, weather, and everyday wear can break larger plastic items into smaller and smaller pieces, some eventually becoming microplastics.

When it rains, those plastic fragments can wash from streets, sidewalks, parking lots, and landscaped areas into storm drains and local creeks.

A few simple actions can help keep plastic out of our waterways:
• Pick up litter before it washes away.
• Keep trash and recycling container lids closed.
• Reduce unnecessary single-use plastics.
• Never put trash or debris in a storm drain.

💧 What’s on the ground today could be in our creeks after the next rain.

Photo Caption: Plastic, like this lid from a fast-food cup, doesn’t disappear; it breaks down.

Today's is a photo of the buildings on W. Main Street circa 1894. At the far left is the Christian Church, built in 1884 on the north side of W. Main Street (at the time Hotel Street) just off Santa Cruz Avenue. In 1930, the church moved a block west to the northwest corner of W. Main Street and Lyndon Avenue until it was torn down in 1958. On the right is the Ancient Order of United Workmen building, built in 1881 near the northwest corner of W. Main and Santa Cruz Avenue and moved to this site in January 1894. Prior to being torn down in 1930, it was used as a Boy Scout hall. Courtesy of Town historical archives.
