From our friends San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority
California Bans "Sell By" Food Labels ♻️🌿
Help reduce food waste by understanding what food labels actually mean:
Food labels can often be confusing, so here's a simple guide:
🗓️"Best if Used By" ➡️ Food is at its best quality before this date! Plan around it and find ways to use ingredients or food prior to this date.
🧀"Use By" ➡️ Recommended date for peak quality. Eat or freeze food before this date.
🚫"Sell By" ➡️ Intended for retailers to sell product by. California is phasing this label out to reduce unnecessary food waste.
By standardizing food labels, California is making an effort to reduce edible, unexpired food out of landfills.
