**History, Mystery, and the Ghost Stories of Trevilian Station Battlefield**

Whether you’re a skeptic, a believer, or someone who simply enjoys a good story, Trevilian Station Battlefield has no shortage of tales to tell.

By day, visitors come to explore scenic trails, tour the historic Trevilian House, and learn about the largest all-cavalry battle of the Civil War. But after sunset, some say the battlefield reveals another side of its history - one filled with unexplained sounds, mysterious encounters, and stories that may be shared for generations.

Of course, whether these experiences are paranormal or simply products of imagination is up to each visitor to decide.

**A Landscape of Stories**

The Battle of Trevilian Station raged across more than 7,000 acres on June 11 and 12, 1864. Thousands of cavalrymen fought across the fields and forests surrounding what is now Trevilian Station Battlefield Park.

For many people interested in the paranormal, places with deep histories, especially battlefields, often seem to hold onto the past in unexpected ways.

Ed Crebbs, a longtime steward of the Battlefield and member of the TSB Foundation explains, "There were a lot of people killed on both sides. Many were left on the battlefield. We like to think most were buried, but we don't know much about those who may not have been. That may be one reason people feel that the spirits are still there."

Over the years, several paranormal investigation groups have visited the property. Some have spent evenings exploring the historic house, while others have walked the trails, visited the cemeteries, or investigated the reconstructed Netherland Tavern. Their experiences have produced a collection of stories that continue to circulate among volunteers, visitors, and local residents.

**Voices in the Trevilian House**

Among the many stories shared by paranormal investigators who have visited Trevilian House, one stands out.

During a recent investigation, a member of a ghost-hunting group wore noise-cancelling headphones while others asked questions aloud in different parts of the house. As Ed described it, the goal was to see whether any responses or impressions would come through that others might not immediately hear.

At one point, the investigator wearing the headphones lay down on a bed in an upstairs room. As the questions continued, he began speaking as though responding to voices no one else in the room could hear.

Those present later said he appeared to be hearing multiple responses, but one stood out: a woman who identified herself as “Vicky.” According to the account, she repeatedly said, “I’m with Ed.”

At the time, no one in the group understood who Victoria was or what the phrase meant. It was noted, but not connected to anything specific about the property.

It wasn’t until later that a possible connection emerged.

Several hundred yards north of the Trevilian House sits a historic cemetery on the battlefield property. A grave there belongs to a woman named Victoria. Months before the investigation, volunteers had discovered her headstone broken into several pieces. Ed had taken the stone home, carefully repaired it, and later returned it to the cemetery.

The investigators were unaware of the damaged gravestone and had never been told the story. Could it have been a coincidence? A lucky guess? Or something more?

No one can say for certain.

Other accounts inside the Trevilian House add to this collection of unexplained moments. According to Ed, one ghost-hunting group using a recorder captured what sounded like an elderly woman’s voice saying, “Who’s in my house?” - a phrase that appeared twice in close succession on playback, even though no one present reported hearing it at the time.

Others have reported hearing doors open and close when no one else was inside, or footsteps moving through the house despite empty hallways and locked rooms. One visitor even returned a week after an overnight stay carrying a spoon she had inexplicably found buried at the bottom of her bag - despite insisting it had been sitting on a table inside the house the night before.

**Soldiers Still Walking the Battlefield**

While some of Trevilian Station's ghost stories are connected to the house, others seem tied directly to the battlefield itself.

One account comes from a historic cemetery along the trail system. Years ago, according to Ed, a family was horseback riding near the cemetery when a young girl suddenly asked her mother, "Who is that man behind the tree?" The adults saw no one there. The child later insisted she had seen a soldier standing among the trees.

Another sighting came from a neighboring landowner shortly after he purchased property adjacent to the battlefield. Sitting outside near sunset, he noticed a lone figure standing in his yard beyond the driveway. Assuming it was a visitor, he called out several times but received no response. As he walked closer, he realized the figure appeared to be wearing a military uniform. When he reached within a few yards, the figure disappeared.

During a paranormal investigation near the trailhead, another soldier was spotted. As three investigators began walking a trail, one person moved ahead while the other two followed behind. Both trailing investigators later reported seeing a second figure step onto the trail and begin following their companion. Moments later, the figure was gone.

Whether these encounters are tricks of light, active imaginations, or something harder to explain, they all share one thing in common: each took place on land where thousands of cavalrymen fought, camped, and died during two intense days in June 1864.

As for why so many of these stories seem tied to battlefields, Ed has a simple theory. "A lot of people died on battlefields," he said. "If there are spirits out there, maybe some of them are still connected to the battle."

**Mysteries at Netherland Tavern**

A short distance from the battlefield stands a reconstruction of the historic Netherland Tavern, once a busy stagecoach stop along the road between Fredericksburg and Charlottesville.

The original tavern dates to the early 1800s and changed hands several times before becoming known as Netherland Tavern. By the Civil War, it was a well-known landmark in the community and found itself at the center of military activity during the Battle of Trevilian Station. Confederate General Wade Hampton even used the tavern area as his headquarters on the eve of the battle.

Today, the original structure is gone, except for the foundation, but stories associated with the site remain.

Visitors investigating the tavern have reported hearing unexplained footsteps on multiple floors when no one else was present. Others have captured unusual images in photographs. In one case, a visitor reviewing photos later noticed what appeared to be a woman standing in the reflection of a mirror inside what had once been the tavern's barroom. Another photograph seemed to show a woman standing in a window despite the building being empty at the time.

One of the strangest images reportedly showed what appeared to be a flash of gunfire visible through a window in a photograph - despite no fi***rm being present when the picture was taken.

For visitors who enjoy a good mystery, the tavern adds another layer to the area's rich collection of local legends.

**Come Visit and Decide for Yourself**

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Trevilian Station's ghost stories is that they aren't particularly frightening.

Most describe curious encounters rather than scary ones - a voice on a recording, footsteps in an empty hallway, or a figure glimpsed along a trail. Whether they're connected to the battle, the families who once lived here, or simply the power of a place steeped in history, they've become part of Trevilian Station's modern folklore.

The next time you visit, walk the trails, tour the house, and experience the battlefield for yourself. And if something unexplained happens along the way? Well, you’ll have your own story to tell.
