Airmen and Soldiers from the Kentucky National Guard’s 41st Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team received numerous decorations recently for exceptional performance across a full spectrum of operations.

Among the honors, commanders bestowed 11 Kentucky Medals for Merit on June 18 for the troops' extraordinary efforts in responding to a civilian plane crash last year. The aircraft went down south of Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on Nov. 4, killing 15 people and igniting a blaze that burned for five hours.

The unit’s Guardsmen deployed to a dangerous operating environment to provide air quality monitoring and plume analysis of toxic threats following the crash, giving emergency managers the data they needed to make decisions about sheltering instructions and evacuation orders.
