Sometimes history feels a little more real when you can put a person in the picture.

The first photograph, believed to date to 1915–1918, shows Dora Voelker at the Crescent Hill Reservoir. Dora and her family lived in Louisville’s West End and relied on the city’s streetcar system to get around. Family trips took them through downtown and along Frankfort Avenue, with the reservoir becoming one of the places they visited along the way.

The photograph was taken by Dora’s husband, Edward Voelker, and is part of a family collection of approximately 200 photographs documenting life in Louisville around the turn of the 20th century.

The second photograph shows Dora’s great nephew, Patrick Erdley, in the same spot 100 years later.

We’re grateful to their family for preserving these photographs and sharing this beautiful glimpse into Louisville’s past with us. More than a century later, the Crescent Hill Reservoir remains part of the story of our city. 🩵

For more than 165 years, Louisville Water Tower has stood along the Ohio River as one of our city’s most recognizable landmarks. But there’s much more to its story than its iconic architecture.

Audience502 recently sat down with Louisville Water historian Jay Ferguson to explore the innovation and ingenuity behind the site, from the steam-powered pumps that helped supply a growing Louisville to the remarkable effort to keep water flowing during the 1937 flood.

It’s a story of architecture, engineering, resilience, and the essential role water has played in Louisville’s growth.

That’s a big pump! Now, imagine a time when those didn’t exist… how do you think we fought fires? BUCKETS! 🪣

In 1812, an ordinance was passed, requiring all property owners making $40 or more annually to have two fire buckets on hand at anytime for fire protection. Louisville Water Company was actually founded years later to help protect the city from fires.
